Arizona public schools have been subjected to heavy budget cuts by the state legislature under the guise of fiscal deficits. In reality, lawmakers responsible for these cuts are mainly interested in busting teacher and maintenance unions to control salaries and prevent union protections and strikes. These same lawmakers are doing the bidding for commercial education interests, vis a vi profit oriented charter schools and non-profit religious schools. This is compounded by putting performance pressure on schools based on testing rather than experiential learning. Children learn to be good test-takers, but in the long run don't receive the training they need for the jobs of the future.
We are a non-profit group that engages the Tucson community on issues related to public education. We do information and entertainment events that raise funds for groups that directly impact public education. We host the annual Celebrity Spelling Bee, featuring local and state leaders vying for best speller honors. We partnered with the renown Voices for Education and the University of Arizona Department of Education in presenting education researchers and small class advocate Jeremy Finn to Tucsonans. Our TucsonLiteracy.org website is accessed by people all over the world in search of information on literacy services. We have also worked with BEYOND and Dancing In the Streets, a ballet studio in the heart of South Tucson which produces an annual "Nutcracker".
We are always interested in your feedback and speaking with you about potential volunteer activities. Leave us a note or give us a call!
